The Recycling Generation
The UK alone consumes around 5 million tonnes of plastics each year; 20% is already recovered or recycled, mostly from packaging. At household level around 45%, approximately ¼ million tonnes, of plastic bottles are recovered from the UK waste stream each year. This represents mostly PET and HDPE bottles. Around one third of post-use plastics recycled is from packaging.
And it’s not just packaging waste that’s being recycled. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into force in 2007 and aims to increase the recycling of familiar household appliances, from refrigerators and washing machines, to mobile phones and printers. Around 1 million tonnes of equipment enters the UK waste stream each year; approximately 50% is recovered.
